FIBROMYALGIA: Fibro - Latin for fiber, myo - Latin for muscle, and algos - Greek for pain. In 1976 the term fibromyalgia was coined and in 1990 this usuage was agreed upon for use by the American College of Rheumatology to describe a little understood syndrome, that while it is not fatal or deforming, is still very debilitating for those who have it.

FACT: Fibromyalgia is second only to osteoarthris for complaints seen by rheumatologists *1

HISTORY: Since the early 1800`s this bewildering set of symptoms has been studied and often renamed, depending on what the understanding of physicians were at the time. Muscular rheumatism, and then fibrositis, were among the most popular until fibromyalgia was finally settled on as being the most accurately descriptive.

FACT: Most people spend upto several years going from one doctor to another before a correct diagnosis is made.
Since the symptoms of fibromyalgia are many and varied, with, until recently no definative test results to guide physicians to a diagnosis, this gave rise to much confusion with the result that some did not believe it to be an actual physical disorder, but either hysteria, attention seeking, or malingering on the patients
part. Manifestly this is not true as has been proved recently by documented evidence; abnormally slow brainwaves *2, alpha wave interrupted sleep pattern (where deep sleep is frequently interrupted similar to wakefulness) *3 and an elevated level of Substance P in the body ( a neurotransmitter of the central nervous system) *4

FACT: An estimated 2% to 6% of the US population suffers from fibromyalgia with an estimated 80% to 90% being women , symptoms often appear during the 40`s and 50`s, but men, the elderly, and even children can be affected *5.
SYMPTOMS: Once a person understands how varied the symptoms can be, it becomes more understandable why it can be so difficult to diagnose; fatigue, widespread musculoskeletal pain, waking up tired (est.60%), restless leg syndrome, allodynia (sensitivity of the skin),digestive upsets, depression, and commonly at least 11 of 18 tenderpoints *6 :here is the incredible variety of potentially accompaning disorders; tension headaches, affected vision, migrain headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ), dysmenorrhea, tingling in the extremities sometimes to the point of very painful pins and needles, frequent urination, breathlessness after walking up a flight of stairs or slope, chest pain - sometimes severe, increased sensitivity of allergic reactions to the enviornment resulting in nasal congestion and so on *7 Occaisonally, a person with fibromyalgia may also suffer from one or more additional disorders such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren's Syndrome, or other auto-immune disorders, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) being one. Note:There is no evidence that if you have any of these other preceding disorders that it is because of the fibromyalgia, or that if you do have these other disorders that it will cause you to have fibromyalgia.
Sometimes fibromyalgia is mistaken for Lyme Disease, and interestingly when one has recovered from Lyme Disease fibromyalgia can be regarded as a post-disease syndrome, conversely fibromyalgia can even precede Lyme Disease. *7

FACT: . Sometimes mild symptoms of fibromyalgia appear in childhood and may be called 'growing pains' +1

DIAGNOSIS: There is no single test to determine fibromyalgia, such as a blood test for diabetes, instead what is used is a set of criteria established by the American Association of Rheumatology;after a thorough physical, where all other disorders are ruled out - and the pain is definately musculoskeletal, that it has lasted more than 3 months, and that at least 11 of the 18 tender points are PAINFUL when pressure is exerted on the point by the examiners finger as relative to other surrounding areas, with the other symptoms presented to the physcian is how a diagnosis is usually made.

FACT: Inflammation is not a part of fibromyalgia though it is now classified under rheumatology +2

TREATMENT: While it`s important to realize that, so far, there is no verified cure for fibromyalgia , a tremendous amount can be done to bring relief so that life becomes liveable again. A combination of approaches works best for most, with a careful plan using gentle stretching excersises, appropriate strength and endurance training, supplements, reduction of stress, massage therapy, chiropractic care and enough rest. Pacing is the watch word here. Your healthcare provider can advise you about a physical program.

FACT: A stretch will not start to take affect until after 30 seconds
